Titled: The Priceless Watch Link
I bought a beautiful Hammacher Schlemmer brand titanium atomic tank style watch from an auction. The watch is a little tight on my wrist, I emailed the service dept of Hammacher Schlemmer to purchase an extra link or two for this watch. I was emailed back saying they could not locate my original order for this watch from them. I emailed them back about my buying the watch second hand. I was told in rather rude terms that if you are not the original purchaser from them that there are no parts or service available from them (at any price)and that this is and has been their policy for over 100+ years. This watch was custom built for them (they will not release the mfg.info either). I telephoned the last person to email me, still thinking there must be a misunderstanding, there wasn't. I have never had a more frustrating consumer experience in all my life. IMAGINE IF THIS WAS THE BUSINESS MODEL OF ALL BUSINESSES. NO PARTS OR SERVICE FOR YOUR USED LEXUS OR MERCEDES, MIGHT AS WELL THROW AWAY THAT SECONDHAND ROLEX THAT DOESN'T WORK ANYMORE, CAN'T GET PARTS OR SERVICE. DIDN'T BUY IT NEW FROM ROLEX. I'll bet you can come up with a few more of your own. A true business model that makes sales of spare parts and repair services unobtainable, and by that virtue should make (for example) their $300.00 shirt pocket camcorder for example virtually worthless on the secondary market.
