Date of Review:  Feb 28, 2004
The Bottom Line: Not sure how young Huck is, but I'm guessing around 11 or 12. Thanks, Brendan!

The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn , Mark Twain. A thorough review of this famous book

Date of Review:  Jun 18, 2004
The Bottom Line: Read this book if you like travelogues, cultural snapshots, or the Mississippi River. If you don't, don't bother , all subjects covered better elsewhere.
Review: This novel is a combination of travelogue and social commentary on the culture of the southern United States as viewed through the eyes of an itinerant teenager.

Huckleberry Finn is the fifteen year old son of the town drunk, in a small...

Timeless Classic: Huckleberry Finn

Date of Review:  Apr 29, 2007
The Bottom Line: A great book that should need no introduction, but due to misrepresentations by rogues, does. Read Huckleberry Finn for your own enjoyment and enlightenment.

Professional Reviews

Twain, Mark, New York Times Book Review: "In 1902, the Omaha Public Library banned 'Huckleberry Finn' on the grounds that 'the influence upon the youthful mind is pernicious.' 'The Omaha World Herald' sent Mark Twain a telegram. His response: 'I am tearfully afraid this noise is doing much harm. It has started a number of hitherto spotless people to reading 'Huck Finn', out of a natural human curiosity to learn what this is all about--people who had not heard of him before; people whose morals will go to wreck and ruin now...The publishers are glad, but it makes me want to borrow a handkerchief and cry. I should be sorry to think it was the publishers themselves that got up this entire little flutter to enable them to unload a book that was taking too much room in their cellars, but you never can tell what a publisher will do. I have been one myself."

First Line

You don't know about me without you have read a book by the name of "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer"; but that ain't no matter. That book was made by Mr. Mark Twain, and he told the truth, mainly. There was things which he stretched, but mainly he told the truth.

Paperback, Adventures of Huckleberry Finn
Revered by all of the town's children and dreaded by all of its mothers, Huckleberry Finn is indisputably the most appealing child-hero in American literature. Unlike the tall-tale, idyllic world of Tom Sawyer, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is firmly grounded in early reality. From the abusive drunkard who serves as Huckleberry's father, to Huck's first tentative grappling with issues of personal liberty and the unknown, Huckleberry Finn endeavors to delve quite a bit deeper into the complexities - both joyful and tragic of life.
