I beg, implore, on hands-and-knees for you to read this book

Date of Review:  Oct 26, 2000
Review: Yowzers! I went to use the facilites (watercloset, john, head, lavatory), the other morn, selected a stall, put up those warning tapes that vice use at the site of violent crimes, erected sawhorses, and, for good measure, put up a road flare, all to...

A Long-winded, Rambling Epinion About a Really Great Book

Date of Review:  Mar 11, 2001
The Bottom Line: Eggers' story is a heartbreaking work of genius. While Eggers' style may not appeal to everyone, his book shares his story with great humor and brutal honesty.
Review: One day, while shopping at BJs I saw A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius: Based on A True Story by Dave Eggers. Wow - what a title! I had never heard of it, but with a title like that it is either pure genius or pure trash. Open it up ?...

Pure of Heart; Work of Art

Date of Review:  Apr 3, 2000
Review: Ever had one of those days? How about one of those lifetimes? Dave Eggers has!

You know when you meet a friend for coffee and they tell you all sorts of things you never knew about them and you become completely lost in the conversation...

A snarky tale of a man, his brother and death

Date of Review:  Apr 13, 2000
Review: The author of this epinion would like to make several points:

a)That he is copying the style of A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius unabashedly.
b)That in doing so, he is only reinforcing the contrast between his sub-par writing...

Great Book, Lame ending!

Date of Review:  Jan 2, 2001
Review: I read this book on the recommendation of both my wife and a group of her friends who had been praising it all this past year. I finally got around to it when I got shelved with the flu over the New Years weekend.

This book was hilarious...

A Powerful and Poignant Defense Against Grief

Date of Review:  Jan 6, 2001
The Bottom Line: This is an astonishingly intimate memoir of Eggers, orphaned in young adulthood and named guardian of his younger brother. I laughed, I cried, I thought, I sighed.
Review: Released in paperback February 2001.

A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius is the topsoil of a tragedy, the first layers of earth pushed aside in a painful personal excavation, where the treasure seems to remain deeply buried.

A Prelude to Fame

Date of Review:  Apr 18, 2000
Review: "A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius" is the autobiography of its author, Dave Eggers, who is also the founder and editor of McSweeneys, a quarterly magazine. The book chronicles the years following the near-simultaneous, yet unrelated, deaths...

Mo' meta blues

Date of Review:  Feb 10, 2000
Review: After the Eggers bookreading in the City, I overheard one hipster savant say to another: "He even uses the same font as David Foster Wallace."

He was wrong, of course. Flip through "Infinite Jest" and look at the serifs on the G's. Compare...

A Blockbuster Paperback Deal of Immense Proportions

Date of Review:  May 10, 2000
Review: New York writers cringed with fear and envy when they learned that Dave Eggers had signed a 1.4 million dollar deal for the paperback rights to "A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius." Granted, Eggers will see only a fraction of the amount after...
