550 sport vs 535 sport an easy choice

by   grpanomi ,   May 18, 2008

Pros:  looks,engine,suspension exclusivity

Cons:  expensive, but nothing else compares to its driving dynamics

The Bottom Line:  best midsize sedan driving dynamics, tested audi a6, merc e500,infiniti m45. None came close to this cars performance and fun factor.

Overall Rating: 5/5 stars

Author's Review

I went in to buy a 535 sport and walked out with a 550 sport. I thought since the performance according to all the reviews is about the same why not save the 9k difference right. Oh was I wrong. 1st I compared a 535 w/ sport package and sport auto against a 550 w sport package and sport auto. The suspensions are completely different in both sport packages of the 535 and 550. The 550 suspension was much more sure footed had little body movement and did not transfer road impacts into the cabin, the 535 suspension had body roll and transfered alot of unpleasant impacts and sound, yet the ride in the 550 was no harsher, even with the 19 in wheels. This alone was enough to justify the price difference. Next, the fascia on the 550 are awesome. On the 535 sport you get the same fascia as a base 5 series. On the 550 you get these awesome front/rear fascia that transform the 550 into an evil goth M5 looking sedan except the wheels on the 550 look better that those on the M5. These 19 in wheels are the best looking wheels bmw has put out in years. Now the engines, both are fast, but I have to give the advantage to the v8. It had better cold startibility ,more linear throttle response, more overall power and a way better sound than the twin turbo 6. Also there is a small turbo lag hesitation right off throttle w/ the sport auto that the v8 doesn't have. It would not be noticable with a manual however. So as you can tell for 9k more you get a better engine, better suspension and a better looking 5 series. In this case you get what you pay for. Dropping the extra 9k on the 550 was one of the easiest decisions I've ever made.
