Product Review

The Fountainhead, the Good, Bad, and Ugly

by   splinterlfe ,   May 7, 2006

Pros:  terrific story teller, explains her ideas to even the most simple minded ones

Cons:  sometimes goes overkill with her ideas, characters are incredible sometimes, as in NOT credible

The Bottom Line:  Ayn Rand is masterful in her work. It is one of favorite books of all time. If you give it a chance, you will not be disappointed.

Overall Rating: 5/5 stars

Author's Review

I read this book my freshman year on the request of my older sister and i have to say it has left a profound impact on me. I've never heard of Ayn Rand before but because I read this book, I ended up reading Atlas shrugged, Anthem, We the living, and whatever I could dig up at the local library.

The characters are amazing. They are each very complex and its very easy to like the main character and root for the good guy through out.

Ayn Rand's philosophy is shared through this wonderful story. I have to say, I am Christian and half the stuff she says I do not agree with. Her ideas when I think about it are very capitalistic (funny enough) in many regards, which is made even clearer in Atlas Shrugged. But I have to admit, her arguments are convincing and I enjoy reading them because it makes me THINK. anything in this world that makes you really THINK, personally, i think is worth looking into.

now for the bad...Ayn Rand kinda sledge hammer's her ideas home over and over again that it gets kind of annoying at times. And the characters are so complex and smart and cunning, and have such odd relationships with each other that sometimes it seems like you've been warped into some bad soap opera. The thing is it's believable only because Rand has developed such elaborate backgrounds so that the reader can relate to the characters but if you were just reading the dialogues, its kinda silly.

Some people have said Ayn Rand simply makes a 50 page essay into a 700+ novel which is why its retarded to read. Personally, I don't enjoy reading 50 page philosophy papers. I enjoy reading novels that suck me in and MAYBE I learn something along the way.

Fountainhead was awesome. Buy a copy.
