Author's Review
Buzz Lightyear of Star Command: The Adventure Begins was never meant to be another Toy Story movie sequel. Even though there is a short trailer before the actual Buzz Lightyear adventure, I believe that most people who are criticizing this picture because they expected the cutsy stories that Toy Story and Toy Story II were. This is very unfair because Buzz Lightyear of Star Command: The Adventure Begins is a really great adventure/action cartoon if you view this on its own merit outside of the Toy Story realm.
In Buzz Lightyear of Star Command: The Adventure Begins Buzz Lightyear is shown in his official capacity as being a Space Ranger for Star Command. There's a brief scene where Buzz loses his partner in an attempt to rescue the LGM (Little Green Men) who were captured by the Evil Emperor Zurg, and thus brings forth the main theme for the movie which shows Buzz's unwillingness to accept a woman as his partner.
His male chauvinist attitude almost costs the entire universe its future. However, Buzz finally accepts Mira Nora who is a princess of a planet Buzz saved in the past. Mira Nora has special powers that allow her to ghost through solid walls and materials so that she can sneak into places. Mira is eventually recruited as Buzz's partners along with XR, an Experimental Robot Alien created by the LGM, and Booster, who's a huge alien type character who was formerly a janitor at Star Command.
Assisting the Evil Emperor Zurg in his take over of the universe by using the UNIMIND of the LGM (Little Green Men) is a mysterious special agent called, Agent Z, who seems to know Buzz Lightyear even better than he does. Because he's clouded by a mask and a shroud of darkness, no one really knows who Agent Z is until the end of the movie.
While the plot has a lot of the characteristics of the Star Wars and Star Trek series of films, you have to remember that most of the children who are watching this movie were not even born during the time most of this was going on. So these types of similarities were intentionally placed within Buzz Lightyear of Star Command: The Adventure Begins to entertain parents of the children watching this movie by being a parody of those scenes.
Overall, my son has watched this movie now two times within the past two days. I had originally rented the movie first so that I could make sure that this would be a film that I would eventually purchase outright. Because he's enjoyed it so much and has jumped all over the living room during both performances and laughed so hard, I will eventually buy this for our growing video collection. Note though that the reason why I am going to buy this video is because it's a great action/adventure movie and NOT because it is Toy Story.
I do believe though that Disney is making a terrible mistake though by creating the television series Buzz Lightyear of Star Command to accompany this video. In that light, I truly believe that because they have chosen to do this that it may diminish their chances of producing another quality Toy Story movie in the future because of decreased popularity.
However, I believe that if you are a true lover of the original story line of the Buzz Lightyear character which is not the "toy" that was portrayed in the Toy Story movies, then you will enjoy viewing the original story of Buzz Lightyear and his adventures in Star Command. For this reason, I believe that this movie is the best for that reason and I highly recommend it for that reason.
