Best semi-pro camcorder? Closest there is.

The Bottom Line: Sony's new VX camera will have to be something special to beat the GL1/XM2. Image quality second to none at this price.
Review: The successor to the outgoing XM1/GL1 adds manual audio record levels to the spec sheet and a beefed up still camera.
Canon pretty much got it right with the XM1/GL1 so there is little to fault on this machine.

The Bottom Line: Buy this if you want a quality camera. Don't cheap out and get 1-chip cameras.You might want to wait for the Sony HD-CAMS though at this point.
Review: I was looking for a new miniDV cam for a long time. I had to make sure that the choice was researched and researched so I didn't go wrong. I knew I wanted a 3CCD camera. That seperates colors and luminance and contrast I think. Something like that...

The Bottom Line: A Great camcorder if you have the money. Still, newer things may be out there and you may want to research those before you make this purchase.
Review: This Camcorder is possibly the best Canon has made. However, it's cost proves prohibitive for many. It's not like you aren't getting what you pay for, however. It is certainly a great camcorder, and has everything you could want in a camcorder...

Good Camcorder, but buggy.

The Bottom Line: Be very afraid. My Sony DCR PC100 Camcorder still going strong - no problems after 6 years. This Canon is buggy; be wary of tape mechanism issues and bad pixels.
Review: Update 03/12/07. Problem encountered.

After 26 months of intermittently heavy use, my GL-2 has developed a "bad pixel" problem. In the lower right quadrant of any attached display, a white single lixel appears (even with the lens cap on)...

GL2 tape system needs to be recalled

The Bottom Line: Canon needs to honestly recall the tape handling system due to the number of customers experiencing failures in a short period as this cancels out any of its great qualities
