It’s like hanging your clothes to dry, but without the work

When my daughter was born last September I had to hunt down glass bottles. Now they are in every store. This in large part has to do with Bisphenol A, or BPA, the chemical found in certain hard plastics that has been linked to health affects like cancer and early puberty. BPA has been found in many baby bottles and while the jury is still out on how harmful the chemical may be, many parents are not taking chances and are switching to BPA free bottles.

Besides being BPA free, glass is not known to leech anything harmful into liquids or food. You should be mindful though that latex nipples leech chemicals, so be sure to buy the bottles with silicone nipples if that is your main concern.

I use these Evenflo glass bottles and Platex Drop-ins because BPA has always been a concern of mine. When she was younger, my daughter preferred the wide nipple on the Playtex bottles, but now that she is 7 months old she is less picky about nipples and uses these just as often.

Drop-ins are hard to deal with while making bottles when you are out and about, like at the store, so glass bottles have always been my “going places” bottles. After dropping them many times on tiles floors, I am no longer worried about breaking these bottles! They aren’t like an adult glass; they are really thick and sturdy. This makes them a little heavy, although my daughter can hold an 8-ounce bottle up by herself. Evenflo also makes a 4-ounce bottle.

The bottles come with a slow flow nipple. It may be possible to buy packages with faster flows, but I haven’t come across one. It is a standard sized nipple so you can use any standard size nipple and cap ring with the bottle, as well as use the bottles with any Medela breast pump. It even comes with a little cap that can be screwed on under the cap ring so you can store breast milk or formula in the refrigerator.

Of course, when shopping for bottles, even BPA free bottles, there are a lot of choices. None of the plastic alternatives can come close to the traditional look and feel of a glass bottle though. It’s what drew me in and makes me keep pulling them out of the cupboard.
