GE JVM2070 1100 Watts Microwave Oven
Date of Review: Mar 13, 2006
The Bottom Line: It is a lot of money for a microwave, but this is a nice one
Despite the fact that I don t really use microwaves very much and don t particularly like them I seem to keep ending up with nice ones. Now I was thrilled a few years back when I bought my GE JVM1440 Microwave Oven. (If you are interested here is the review
http://www.epinions.com/content_169251081860 ) That microwave had wonderful features I never knew I wanted such as an adjustable light on the bottom, quick start buttons, and venting for your range. Now I just moved house and inherited a kitchen with all brand new appliances. My new GE JVM2070 1100 Watts Microwave Oven has all the bells and whistles of its predecessor and a few more.
Looks and Display I wanted to talk about looks right off the bat because I think that is probably the most striking feature about this microwave. I never in my life thought I would be saying this, but this microwave looks cool. You have the stainless finish that is standard on a lot of microwaves with a designer style stainless handle, but then you also have this wow factor touch screen display. You just touch the pad and it lights up with options. Depending on what you choose the microwave either activates or the screen changes to give you more options relates to your last choice. The main menu is intuitively grouped into five categories including; Cook, Reheat, Defrost, Custom and Options. Many of the screens have a help button in case you get confused or lost. All of these options may seem a bit intimidating but navigation really is quite intuitive and you always have the help button if you need it. My custom buttons are currently set to 30 second quick start and popcorn. When the microwave is microwaving there is a button to add 30 seconds to the cook time in case you think it needs to go a bit longer. The GE JVM2070 1100 Watts Microwave Oven is designed to fit under a 30 inch cabinet and measures 15 7/16 inches deep by 16 11/32 high by 29 7/8 wide. The total interior capacity is 2 foot 3 inches.
Features The GE JVM2070 1100 Watts Microwave Oven is just loaded with features, many of which I will probably never use but some of them are quite nice. For starters this microwave offers 10 power settings and two wire oven racks with two positions. There are many instant on sensor cook settings including; Bacon, Beverage, eggs, fish, fruit, meats, popcorn, potatoes, and rice. The turntable has an option to be disabled for very large dishes and measures 14.25 inches. I never use it but GE JVM2070 1100 Watts Microwave Oven offers a defrost setting. Microwaves heat by moving the water molecules to an excited state. When those molecules can t move, such as when they are frozen, microwaves to a poor job of heating. Microwaves try to compensate for this by pulsing the waves on and then off for a while, slowly unfreezing the water. My personal experience has always been that the outside of the meat cooks (terribly) and the inside stays frozen. Do yourself a favor and defrost in some cold water. If you are in a big hurry, eat something that isn t frozen. The GE JVM2070 1100 Watts Microwave Oven also offers some other pretty standard features such as a kitchen timer, interior and underneath halogen lights, and 3 speed exhaust fan. This is by no means an exhaustive list and I don t think it is good reading to simply read a big list of features. I have just tried to convey that you have a TON of features of varying degrees of usefulness.
Performance The first thing I noticed is that the GE JVM2070 1100 Watts Microwave Oven cooks faster than my old microwave. I think that has to be due to the fact that it is 1100 watts as opposed to the 950 watts its predecessor brought to the cooking table. This thing cooks fast and it cooks through. I am used to setting a minute of cook time for a hot dog (if I am going to eat them I need them really cooked). In one minute with this microwave your hot dog will be in pieces. So it cooks fast, has a very large interior capacity, and is easy to use. The first time I ever went to use it I was able to navigate the menus without spending a single minute with the manual.
Conclusion In all honesty, this is a nicer microwave than I probably would have ever bought for myself. I was perfectly happy with my old one, but this does have some features I like better. I think the touch screen menu looks cool and is very easy to use. I like the styling on the GE JVM2070 1100 Watts Microwave Oven better. Finally, I like the faster cooking time. I did not buy this myself but it looks like this microwave retails for over $600. If you really like these features and don t balk at the price tag then I think the GE JVM2070 1100 Watts Microwave Oven is a good overall choice.
