Product Review

Grundig Mini 100PE

by   hhammer ,   Jul 29, 2004

Pros:  good SW, excellent FM Stereo, batteries seem to last forever

Cons:  cheap and scratchy volume potentiometer, AM really weak

The Bottom Line:  Inexpensive, light, sensitive

Overall Rating: 4/5 stars

Author's Review

I had one of these: The potentiometer for the volume control died after 50 hours of use. Autopsy revealed an "el-cheapo" component.

FM stereo was superb (ear buds), sound, sensitivity, station separation. Just amazing, I assume the radio uses the quality tuner chip of a Walkman or similar

AM "stunk". 15 (!) miles from New York City you could not listen to WCBS, a news station that my car radio will pick up anytime from Baltimore to Rhode Island. The comment from another reviewer that this is due to the small size of the ferrite rod is wrong: The similarly small sized Sony SW-22 or SW-1 have excellent AM reception.

SW reception in the US was the equal of the Sony SW-22, and better than most pocket SW radios. Sensitivity is good especially for the higher frequency short wave bands (good when traveling in the Caribbean and in California - afternoons on the boat). The Sony SW-22 beats the Grundig any time for the 49m band, but the Grundig beats the "Sonies" in Europe, where they are truly "ALL Wave" radios. You receive typically up to three stations at the same time. Hope you are multi-lingual.

Summary, if you listen at night to foreign language broadcasts, the Grundig is good for travel on the East Coast, Europe, Mid-East and Africa.
And decidedly NOT good enough for Colorado and anything West from there.
