Author's Review
I was half way home, looking forward to an all-new episode of The West Wing, followed by the best show on television, Law & Order. That Lenny cracks me up. I didn't want to stop, didn't want to meet and greet, didn't want a glass of wine and a good cigar
Oh, heck. Who am I kidding?
I perched myself at the end of the bar, sitting with my posse (how hip am I?). B. is one of my best friends. He manages the place. J.R. owns the local Wholesaler that handles almost all of the top French and Italian wines. Fuente, as I shall call him, is a Rep for a national company that handles many of the upper end cigar lines. I love these guys. They make an evening special. They almost always pick up the tab.
When I arrived B. and J.R. were in the midst of an animated discussion about a line of Austrian wines. B. says they aren't selling. J.R. knows this all too well; he has some 30 cases stacked up in his warehouse. My arrival comes at precisely the right moment. Another minute or two and J.R. would have been to the begging point. We all hate it when J.R. begs.
Hoping for a permanent change of subject, B. offers me a glass of the '95 Chateau Lynch-Bages, a wine I dearly love. Not wanting to be ungracious, I of course accepted. The first half of my plan has worked perfectly. (Look for a review of this wine soon)
Fuente, not wanting to be out done sticks one of these H. Upmann Lonsdales in my mouth. Says he knows it's not my usual type of smoke, but thinks I will be pleased. Says if I like them he's got a box out in the car I can have. Part two: direct hit.
Fuentte is right. It's not my usual kind of smoke. It lights easily and draws the same. This cigar has a somewhat Smokey flavor. On the exhale (not the opposite in inhale, by the way) it's as if I'm in one of those leather shops. You know that smell? New leather (of course, by the time we get leather it is not exactly new, Elsie). Also, I find the sensation of freshly turned earth. It is very mild. It is nice. It is easy. Well, Tina and me don't do nice and easy. We do rough
Sorry.
I took the box with me when I left. They'll stay in the Humidor for times when I need something that isn't too much of a challenge, or for my frequent non-smoking guests who insist on joining in. I can be nice.
