Product Review

See Ricki hair hop and bop

by   Gavinsmom ,   Sep 6, 2000

Pros:  Funny in a way

Cons:  weak plot

Overall Rating: 3/5 stars

Author's Review

Even though this movie could have ended Ricki Lake's career before it even started I like it and proudly own a copy. It's a John Waters film so of course the plot is weak but enjoyable. Ricki is a hefty high school student who loves to watch the corny collins show with her best friend Penny and their ultimate dream is to be on the council. Tracy (played by ricki) ends up on the council and steals the dream guy away from her enemy amber and becomes the favorite corny collins dancer among african american teens. Amidst all of this the movie takes a half hearted approach to touch upon segregation and integration in Baltimore. I enjoy it because I like any movie where people dance in it, even if it is line dancing to music created before I was born. The movie also stars the late Divine as Tracy's mother and the owner of the studio where the corny collins show is filmed. I don't know that I would recommend this film to just anyone, I would have to know that they would like this type of comedy, if not then they would probably find this movie dull.
