Product Review

Good sound, enough power but gets very hot

by   gboisvert ,   Nov 21, 2006

Pros:  Relatively low footprint for 5 speakers installation with clean power, fair power

Cons:  Made in China, gets very hot, hookups not on side

The Bottom Line:  Good sounding amp with enough power but gets very hot. Relatively small footprint for an all in one installation (5 channels). Too bad it's made in China...

Overall Rating: 2/5 stars

Author's Review

I bought this amp to drive 2 * 5"x7" Clarion SRC5715 front speakers (35 Watts RMS + added extra JL Audio Tweeters), 2 * 5 1/4" stock rear speaker (about 30 Watts RMS) and an Aura NS12-513-4A sub in a ported enclosure (200 Watts RMS, 800 Watts RMS Peak).

As i had few spare time, so i used the amp in 2+1 configuration for a couple of weeks (front speakers + sub, only 3 channels used). The amp was able to push quite a lot of bass from my sub and the front speakers were playing cleanly.

After about an hour of playing with sub power to about 85%, i checked the amp to find it very hot (your fingers cannot stay on the amp even for short time). We were not even in the very hot temperature of summer, it was abour 70 degrees fahrenheit outside...

After a week of using it, the amp started to produce a "bump" in the sub at startup. Soon after that, it produced a bump but stayed in "protect" state. I had to send back the amp for service and i still not have it.

I don't even imagine how hot would it be pushing the rated 4 x 110W RMS + 1 x 200W RMS at 2 ohms... After what happened, i started to check in the Internet and found other peoples talking about the very hot the amp gets as they use it. The amp has no fan to help dissipate the heat.

My review is "acceptable" because when it plays, it plays with good sound an can push my sub ok. The sound is good in general, i'd like to hear it with hi-fi speakers though.

If you decide to buy it, be prepared to install it with precaution and be sure to buy fan(s) to push the heat away from the amp's body.

If i would have known the heat "problem" before, i'd buy something else for sure. JBL efficient amps don't show the same behavior that's for sure... but they cost more.

Oh, and i'd like to suggest to car amp manufacturer to put power & audio connector on the side as JL Audio 300/4 amp, i had a problem fitting this long amp in my car's trunk...
