by   bgoodday ,   Jun 24, 2008

Pros:  Enough comedy to remind you its not reality TV.

Cons:  None

The Bottom Line:  Enough action, comedy and suspense to keep everyone in the family happy.

Overall Rating: 5/5 stars

Author's Review

NCIS is short for Naval Criminal Investigative Service and the show is about team of federal law enforcement agents known as the Major Case Response Team, that investigate crimes against or involving the United States Navy and Marine Corps personnel and property.

The episodes in the first season are as follows.

1. Yankee White - A Navy Commander dies on Air Force One and the NCIS team hijacks the body.

2. Hung Out to Dry – Two kids are making out in their car when a Marine, whose parachute did not open, lands on top of it. Kate makes her first appearance as a team member.

3. Seadog - Everyone is saying that a Navy commander whose body is found on the beach not far from the bodies of two drug runners is dirty but Gibbs follows his instincts.

4. The Immortals - A seaman who enjoyed role-playing computer games is found dead at the bottom of the sea. He has a sword and is in dress whites he should not be wearing. The team must find out what happened to him.

5. The Curse - The team has to investigate a old case about a lieutenant accused of stealing a million dollars worth of payroll money off of a ship. The only clue they have is the body of the man who has been accused.

6. High Seas - A former agent under Gibbs asks the team to come aboard the aircraft carrier he is currently assigned to investigate the deaths of sailors. They find out the sailors might have some extracurricular activities that contribute to their deaths.

7. Sub Rosa – A submariner is found dead but the submarine he is assigned too has reported no missing crewmembers. The team decides to spend some time on the sub to find out who is pretending to be someone else and why. ,

8. Minimum Security - Tony is ecstatic because a navy translator dies while trying to return to the U.S. from Gitmo. That means the team is headed to Cuba. His favorite fantasy island.

9. Marine Down - The day a woman attends her husband funeral she receives a call from him. The team must figure out whether someone is playing games with the widow or is something more sinister going on.

10. Left for Dead - A woman who was buried alive is found but the only thing she can remembers is that a bomb was put aboard a Navy ship.

11. Eye Spy - Monitoring a satellite has never been so much fun. The team uses it to help find out what happened to a Navy Commander working on a special weapons system.

12. My Other Left Foot - A leg bearing a marine tattoo is found in a trash bin and the team is called in to find out what happened.

13. One Shot, One Kill – Gibbs goes undercover to find the sniper that keeps taking out Marine recruiters.

14. The Good Samaritan - A navy dentist stops to help a stranded motorist who kills him. The team investigates only to find similar murders have taken place.

15. Enigma - Gibbs risks his career when his former commanding officer is accused of stealing.

16. BĂȘte Noire – A terrorist takes control of the morgue and Gibbs must figure out how to save those on the team that are trapped inside with the terrorist.

17. The Truth Is Out There – A marine is found dead in a parking lot in a most unusual manner. The team must find out if the illegal nightclub he was at the night he died had anything to do with it.

18. UnSEALed – A prison escapee turns out to be an ex-Navy Seal that keep the team on their toes. Kate is tasked with protecting his son while the others try to find him before he hurts someone else.

19. Dead Man Talking – An NCIS agent was murdered shortly after unsuccessfully trying to discuss his case with Gibbs.

20. Missing – A marine goes missing s and the team learns that all the members of his former unit are turning up dead. What could cause someone to kill all these marines form the same unit?

21. Split Decision – The local militia are up to no good and the team must investigate when a marine is found murdered in their territory.

22. A Weak Link – Becoming a SEAL could kill you or at least that’s what some people think when one of the trainees dies during a training exercise. Gibbs and his team think something else is afoot.

23. Reveille - This is the last episode of the season and the terrorist that took control of the morgue in an earlier episode is back and he has plans to harm the President. Things aren’t always as they appear and the team must work quickly to solve this puzzle.

The Cast

Mark Harmon – Supervisory Special Agent Leroy Jethro Gibbs
He is a tough marine now tasked with supervising a team of agents who often behave like children. He is divorced, which is referenced often, loves his Starbucks and has a set of rules that those who work with him must follow. Rule # 23 is never get between a marine and his coffee. He is also not mechanically inclined and that often creates humorous situations on the show.

Michael Weatherly - Special Agent Anthony ‘Tony’ DiNozzo
Tony is the senior field agent on the team and has no problems reminding the other of this fact. He is a former homicide detective as well as a college basketball player. His primary focus in life is women and spends a great deal of his time flirting with them. He loves to get into everybody else business and this has created some very awkward moments for him and the team. He enjoys talking about scenes from movies and how they relate to the situation the team currently finds themselves in.

Sasha Alexander – Special Agent Caitlin ‘Kate’ Todd
Kate was introduced in the first episode as a Secret Service Agent having an affair with an officer. She resigns at the end of the episode and shows up a crime scene in the second episode, having been hired by Gibbs. Kate spends a lot of time bantering back and forth with Tony. She is very sharp and gets along well with everyone on the team. She has many friends at the FBI and State Department that she calls upon to help when needed.

Pauley Perette – Abby Sciuto
Abby is a forensic scientist who is into the gothic style. She has a spider web tattoo on her neck and several on her arms. She wears her hair up in two ponytails and is often in black clothing with platform shoes. She is very sweet and get s along well with everyone on the team. She solves many complex puzzles and Gibbs often brings her a Caf-Pow as a reward. I would say a Caf-Pow is similar to a Super Big Gulp. She works alone in the lab with occasional help from ‘Ducky”.

David McCallum – Dr. Donald “Ducky” Mallard
He assists the team by performing autopsies in an unusual manner. He talks to the dead with his English accent. He is always telling stories about his ‘salad days’ and Gibbs often interrupts so that they can get to the point. He is very serious about his crime scenes and has gotten into a quarrel or two because someone has disturbed them. He takes care of his elderly mother and the two of them are quite the comedy routine.

NCIS has started off with a bang. We began watching it because of JAG. The team appears in two episodes of JAG because they are investigating a murder Commander Rabb is accused of committing. The first season was nothing short of great. The storyline for the show as a whole keeps you interested and I believe it is because of the attention the writers give to building up the characters. They create scenarios so that you are able to escape and bond with these people on certain levels. Don’t get me wrong, I have no desire to live in TV land but they do a great job of making the cast seem real.

Each episode had something new and exciting to investigate. Whether the team was traveling around the world or right at home in the DC Naval Yard, the plot was intense and kept you interested for the entire 50 minutes. It’s like there were little cliffhangers before commercial breaks so you couldn’t wait to get through them. I have personally enjoyed this set of 6 discs. I do not spend a lot of time on the extras because I could care less what the actors have to say. I do not watch the show for the reality aspect. I do not want to know about the actor, just about the character they play.

I would highly recommend you buy these discs and enjoy them in the off season of your favorite show. They will get you hooked for sure.

Thanks for reading and rating. Have a great day!
