Author's Review
My company standardizes everything, and all of our PDA's are Palms. We've got about 150 people of varying technological skill levels using them on a regular basis, synching them daily with our MS Exchange. Miraculously, we rarely have to make a support call on them! That's a really good track record for ease of use. (I still have people out there who get confused while restarting Windows.)
It also means that these are durable little items. We have had people drop their Palms down stairs, slam them in car doors (don't ask me how...) leave them to bake on their dashboards, leave them to freeze overnight, and other horror stories; and we have never had one break. Of course I wouldn't encourage anyone to treat their Palm that way, but it's definitely saying something about their construction.
I personally didn't think I'd have much use for a Palm, but have become addicted to the easy-to-use calendar system! It's just so easy to keep track of my availability when I can easily synch my home and work calendars daily.
I've also gotten quite attached to some of the freeware available online. I have a program that downloads local showtimes which I find to be very convenient. I also play a couple of card games while I'm stuck in waiting rooms, or relaxing on a lunch break. The Palm beats me more often than not, but I'm learning. I also have downloaded some books, and have enjoyed reading them on the Palm when I have downtime.
Technically speaking, I've never had a problem with any of the hardware, and though I have a couple of hundred contacts, a bunch of games and other software on it, I haven't run into any memory problems. Like all Palms, it eats batteries (I go through 2 AAA's every month or so). It is a speedy little device, both in synch time and run time, and I have been pleased with how easy the display is to read.
All in all, I recommend the PalmIIIx, and think that if you are looking for a basic way to organize your life without a lot of expensive whistles and bells, this is the way to go.
