Author's Review
This is simply the best pda out there. Let me start by saying that this was my very first PDA about four-five years ago when my father brought it home from the BHC center where I live (a homeless center where he works) and I loved it since (it was actually my first PALM PDA) I got it for FREE. However about a year or so (maybe less) I broke it, then later Since I liked it so much, I asked someone with a credit card to order me another one off amazon.com and guess what I broke that one too.. :\
Again I had no palm pda, then I bought the Newish Zire 31 and believe me the reviews of it going out on its own after warranty are definitly true. Usually I break them myself either by accident or on purpose (trying to fix it, etc..u know those those paranoid things someone gets when something looks wrong with it, but there isn't for example someone being bothered by a cabnit door slighty open and just having to have to shut or try to shut it even tho if it doesn't close u try to fix it, instead u break it.. ;) ).
Anyway the Zire 31 went out on me and I waited for the battery to drain which it did, but didn't work no more and I still have the SD card with all the apps on it and no Card reader for the PC to copy stuff off it such as a dictionary and the code to use (reg code) on handmark database suite that came with the ZIre 31, etc...
However since that broke and I took it apart and accidently pulled the battery off It definitely will no longer work.. :D
Anyway after about a year or two another IIIx came in, but before it a palm portable keyboard which I kept but had no pda yet and I thought it wouldn't work when I did get another IIIx (seems like the only model I can get for FREE given to the BHC :/ (the IIIx pdat that is) and I relooked the product number up and it worked, however I did have to download the latest/last keyboard driver from the companies website.
However again lol, before I thought I had tossed out the keyboard in the dumpster and it was long gone, and like I said I found it and am using it (makes writing much easier).
The 4mb is low, however buy jackflash for 19 bucks or jacksprat for the same price of 19 (both about 38 bucks) and u can use get rid of the extras from flash that the OS uses with jacksprat and with jackflash store applications in FLASH freeing up RAM.. :)
I will be getting those soon and if I can find the CARD that goes in the inside I will buy it when I get enough money to have even more memory (i heard/read on a forum u can get up to 20mb in the IIIx with a combination of each as someone posted they had that much ;)
4mb is enough tho for most applications that you only USE frequently. Also if u use afterburner hack u can increase the MHZ to at least 29 for optimal perrormance also with afterburner you can increase the MHZ the display is seen, being able to see it much clearer (shareware) and a left scroll hack program (one on palmgear is shareware) and another called lefthack found on the net is FREEWARE, and if u find it on the versiontracker website it says 30+ or so dollars, however after downloading it the info on the program says freeware.. ;) this program puts the scrollbar on the left side of the screen for lefties and u need a hackmanager, I suggest YAHM which is freeware..
Oh and try Screen Prefs off palmgear it will let you set the palm from default black and white to 16 bit gray (shareware and it stays on reset when you check the check box which will appear after you register it.)
Combine at least the above and you got one heck of a PDA here. I got my IIIx to refresh the screen at 52mhz with like I said before the upped speed of 29mhz (u have to have the right combination of check marks on afterburner, etc..and again 16 bit color which does make this readable and much more quicker.
My afterburner settings (the Best settings for the IIIx for optimal/increased perfomance) are:
*0-ws Core (check marked)
*Fast page (check marked)
*Adjust Ticks (check marked)
*Gray (set on 2 or 3)
*Default (29Mhz)
*Accel (Always)
*Find (29mhz)
*Slow (never)
*LCD/n (set to 1)
*After the above LCD/N there is a box to check and it is checked it is right before LClK/2.
*LClk/2 (set to 52Mhz)
If your read the above review I hope u can tell how happy I am with this Gadget.. :) oh yeah one more thing, If I can find the IIIe Special editon Transparent case I will put that case on this PDA.. ;)
Last, but not least, you will have to make some changes on ur own to make it hip and trendy,.,,oh and I had trouble on the colon with graffiti and I found out how to do it. from this post on this site:
http://lists.lib.uchicago.edu/pipermail/piloteers/2000-November/000046.html
The colon is stated with a * at the end as well here are some other Punctuation tips:
***Note: Tap = Tap once on the Graffiti area to enter Punctuation Shift. Don't Tap twice as this will insert a period into your document.
****To know if your in this Punctuation Shift, you will see a Dot in the Right hand corner just above the Graffiti Writing Area. Also you can write the Punctuation stroke(s) anywhere on the Graffiti area.
