Author's Review
You have to be careful when you purchase a combo set like this one. I did not realize that it did not have a tuner. You can still record movies and shows as long as you have an external tuner. What I mean is that, you have to have a device such as a cable box or some kind of a receiver, or satellite to do any kind of recording. The price was still right on this product we only paid $70 at Wal-Mart. I have owned several of these models in past years, Phillips has done a very good job over the years of producing quality merchandise.
Description
If you're wondering, what is the actual size of this VCR player, it is 17 inches wide by 9 inches deep and 3 3/4" in height, and the only ways 5.8 pounds. The face of this unit is silver in color and the body is gray. When I first pulled this out of the box I could not believe that it was so light, this beats the heck out of having two units sitting on your table. When you look at the front of this player you will see two drawers, one on the left is for the VCR and the one on the right is for the DVD player. A standby button, and an open and close button for the DVD player, there also is up-and-down tracking buttons, VCR, audio and video in Jack's, rewind button for the VCR, forward button for the VCR and a stop/eject button for the VCR, a record and play button for VCR. On the right side you have a play and stop button for the DVD player, and you also have a source button which will switch to device back and forth between VCR and DVD player. On the back of this player there are nine separate Jack's, DVD coaxial digital audio out jack, DVD audio out jack's, DVD s-video out jack, DVD component video out jacks, DVD/VCR audio and video out jacks, VCR or audio and video in Jack's. This also comes with a remote control, and two AA batteries, plus one set of audio red and white tips and one yellow video cable.
VCR Features
There are several nice features on this VCR. These include a automatic head cleaner, English, French, and Spanish menus and displays, 19 Micron head, one touch and timer recording, repeat playback, a satellite link, searching for time index forward and reverse, slow-motion, still picture, tape counter, and track adjustment. They do recommend that you use only cassettes that have the VHS marking on them, this has a high quality system and is compatible with any of your home video systems equipment.
DVD Features
There are quite a few more features on the DVD side of this player. These include audio language choices, camera angles, DVD menus in desired languages, markers, MP3 playback, JPEG playback, Windows media audio playback, you'll playback, parental controls, Paul is/fast/slow/step-by-step playback, program playback, progressive scan, random playback, repeat, A-B repeat, resume on, specific Time/title/chapter/track search, subtitles (only if available on the disc), zoom. The DVD player, and this combo set can play positive or negative discs, plus rewritable discs. I have even played plain audio discs in this.
Ease of Use
I have found this unit pretty easy to use, now the remote control is a little bit harder to get used to. If you are trying to use an all-in-one remote on this unit, you might have a few problems. So, I would keep the other remote handy just in case. I have yet to get this to work on an all in one remote that you can purchase for about five dollars. I still have to use both remotes to operate this player. The real nice option that this has is the fact that you do not have to hope he intend the cable into your VCR unit. All you have to do is hope the cable directly to your TV and take the video cable and just hooked up directly from VCR to the TV. It is pretty simple to hook up. But remember, you cannot record on this unless you have an external receiver or tuner of some kind. My wife and I have been using this for several months, we used to have two separate units sitting around and underneath our portable TV. It sure is nice, it takes up less space just as we figured it would.
Warranty
There is only a 90 day limited warranty on this unit. One of the important things I have learned over the years is to save the box and your receipt. Just in case you have to send this unit out for repair you will have something to do with. The other thing that I have found out is that they are making these cheaper and cheaper as the years go by, so before you go and send this off. Remember, you will have to cover the cost of shipping and handling. It might not be worth your money or time to get this repaired.
Conclusion
This is not a bad unit for the money. So I would highly recommend this for somebody that does not have a lot of money, to go ahead and purchase this, this is a safe bet that it will work very good for you and last quite a while.
