I received the
Remington Precision Deluxe Personal Groomer model PG 200 as a Christmas present and must say that I was a bit under whelmed. Because of this gaping joy chasm, I had to weakly fake any enthusiasm for this gift. After all I had coped well enough for years with a small pair of scissors and my electric razor.
The silver trimmer itself stands less than six inches tall and weighs only 2.9 ounces. It comes with two trimmer attachments, one for nose, ear and eyebrow and the other for neckline and sideburn. Two plastic hair length attachments are also included which attach to the aforementioned sideburn trimmer attachment. These are used for beard and mustache trimming and are intended to allow the user to determine the amount of hair trimmed from the beard and/or mustache. In addition a charging stand, charging adaptor, grooming comb, cleaning brush, and small container of blade oil are included.
After reading the reviews of others about this product I had to wonder if I really had the same groomer or just have lower groomer standards. Ive grown to like this trimmer despite its quirks and faults.
THE GOOD
I like the looks of this trimmer and its feel in my hand; its easy to hold and maneuver while trimming.
It can't be used right out of the box because it has to be charged 14-16 hours. When the trimmer is charging a green light glows to indicate the groomer is properly charging. The groomer cant be overcharged so it can be left in the plugged in charging unit between uses. I unplug mine after charging and have found that the charge lasts about two weeks. No complaints there.
Maintenance requirements are quite modest. The attachments can be cleaned under running water weekly or given a quick brush. The cutting blades should be lubricated with a couple drops of oil once a month. I havent done that yet.
It is very easy for me to shape my goatee and mustache using this trimmer. Sideburn edges are crisp and straight, and the edges of my mustache have never looked better. Ive found that the trimmer is great for trimming the hair growing over my ears between haircuts and works nicely to eliminate that scraggly look. I use the trimmer to even the length of my beard and am pleased with it.
The nose trimmer attachment also does a good job. I especially need to use it after telling few fibs.
THE BAD
I do have a few complaints about this trimmer. It buzzes a bit louder than I would like and vibrates noticeably.(Spudman bites his tongue.) This isnt usually a problem (See the ugly.) unless the trimmer is used for a long duration or when Mrs. Spudman and the dog are asleep.
Also Ive found it difficult to attach and remove the plastic hair length pieces. A few times while trying to remove them I thought I had broken the trimmer. At this point Ive given up even bothering with them. Once theyre on I cant figure out how to use the trimmer properly anyway to get the desired beard length. So I just use the trimming head sans attachments using a light touch and my best concentration. Thus far (knock on wood) Ive been pleased with the results, but a slip or moment of inattention could result in an unsightly beard mutilation.
THE UGLY
As mentioned before, this trimmer puts out some mean decibels. Trimming the ears is unpleasant and almost painful. If I do it at all, its very quickly because of the trimmers high sound level.
The instruction sheet is absolutely horrendous. It is a large road map like sheet of paper written in English, French and Spanish. At least all of the English directions are on the same side of this hard to fold sheet. It does require the reader to look every which way and turn the sheet upside down to find and read all of the information. Its opened in front of me now and rereading it for this review has made me dizzy, and I still have to figure out how refold it.
This Remington cordless trimmer does an acceptable job trimming beards, mustaches and sideburns. As a bonus it even does a nice job trimming the neckline and hair growing over the ears to stretch the time between haircuts. For those like myself with modest expectations it is more than adequate. Too bad it doesnt peel potatoes too!
