Author's Review
My wife and I purchased this projector about 45 days ago, partially due to the great reviews on the PLV-Z4 and also due to the long throw lens. Aside from a small mechanical problem, we have been really happy with the performance. I'll admit, that we have had some trouble with the sliding door that covers the lens- from day one, the door didn't automatically open without a little nudge from our fingers. It closed automatically as expected. (More on this later.)
As far as color goes: we think it's great. We project from about 16 feet to a DaLite Model C with a diagonal of about 110". As compared with our CRT, we find some colors better than the CRT, while others are just slightly less vibrant. We aren't videophiles, so we're not particularly picky, but the color is very good. My family and I are now renting movies every week instead of 4 times a year like we used to... I've compared this unit to an old HP 3130, and it's like going from black and white to color.
The fan noise is very very low. (Way better than the HP). Very high WAF (Wife Acceptance Factor).
The remote is easy to use and easy to change when switching from 16:9 to 4:3.
Just for kicks, we compared the S-video input to the component- and we definately noticed the difference. (I'm a skeptic when it comes to cables for A/V equipment...)
Since I had already cut the UPC from the box to get the $300 rebate (total price after rebate $1100), I didn't think I could send it back to the vendor. I was also reluctant to send the unit back because it is so much fun now watching movies on it! I finally decided today to call Sanyo's service dept and inquire about the lens cover problem. After speaking with the rep, he emailed me instructions on how to send the unit back to them for servicing using their account with FedEx. The rep said we would pay no postage and it would go to them overnight and come back via express shipping as well. So far this is a good service experience.
I'll update you on my service experience once I get the unit back.
