Author's Review
Being a child video game attic of the 80's and early 90's, has definitely made me in to a Mario Bros fan. So when the movie was released in 1993 I went to the theater and watch it. While the movie isnt one of my favorites, it's still a fun movie to watch.
Story.
About 63 million years ago or so a meteor smashed into earth, and split it into 2 dimension. In one dimension humans evolved, in the other dinosaurs lived and evolved into humanoid beings.
About 20 years ago a capsule is found outside a Brooklyn monastery, inside the capsule was an egg and a mysterious rock. When the egg hatch it hatch into a humanoid girl.
Skip to the present where young women are mysteriously disappearing, and the Mario bros. plumbing service is in danger of disappearing to. When Luigi's new girlfriend Daisy gets kidnapped by two dimwitted goons called Spike and Izzy, Luigi and his brother Mario quickly give chase. They wind up in the dimension where the dinosaurs live, and where the evil King Koopa runs everything. Koopa has a plan and that plan is to merge the two dimensions back together so he can rule both, but to do that he needs Daisy and the rock.
Characters.
The 3 main characters from the movie that appear in all the Super Mario games are played by, Bob Hoskins, Jhon Leguizamo and Dennis Hopper. Hoskins plays Mario and he's basically what we all imagine what Mario would be from the games and TV series. He's short, tad bit chubby, and fairly grouchy.
Leguizamo plays Luigi; Luigi is a completely different character from the TV shows. The Luigi in the television shows was quiet, shy, and would rather be left at home rather then go with his brother Mario. In the movie Luigi is bold, always a step ahead of his brother Mario, and always speaking his mind. Oh yeah for those nitpickers out there I might want to mention he also a lot younger then his brother Mario. While I like the Luigi in the picture his character does liven up the movie and add some comic relief, purist of the games will definitely hate the Luigi in the films.
Dennis Hopper plays Bowser. While he doesnt look or act like Bowser from the tv show, Hopper does a good job at playing the maniacal villain (that's the part he always plays after all), while Hopper's king koopa won't give you chills every time you see him, he's definitely something to be loathed.
What about the other characters.
While the usual Princess to be kidnapped Toadstool/Peach is missing to be replaced by Daisy from Super Mario Land, there are other changes to the Mario characters.
The only real good guy that appears out of the Super Mario Bros series is Toad, the small little mushroom guy. This time he's a punk rocker with a hair cut who gets turn into a goomba by Koopa, speaking about Goomba's it's time to look at the villains.
First off out of the huge casts of Mario villains, going from Koopa Troopa to Buzzy beatles, not even a fraction of them make it. The one's that are most common are the goombas, the goombas in the game are small mushroom. This time they are huge lizards that walk up right with ridiculously small head. The only other Mario enemy that makes it into the movie is bob-bomb. What about all the other enemy's they make it through the movie has secondary characters like big bertha (a fish that can kill you in one hit in super Mario bros. 3.) turns out to be a guard at a bar. The rest wind up being on shop signs and other posters (for example you have a hammer brothers store).
My thoughts.
While Super Mario Bros. is a fun movie to watch, and I would recommend it to any video gaming geek. Its main flaw goes with that it wonders to far away from the game. Like most video game movies they use the name has a license. They could have rewritten the characters, with characters from Bill and Ted and called Bill & Ted's excellent dinosaur movie and have it basically being the same thing.
My thoughts.
While Super Mario Bros. is not the best movie made from a video game, (that would go to Pokemon 2 and 3.) it's definitely far from being wing commander quality.
