Some people may think that the trailing off of the characters from the real video game is horrible, I, on the other hand, thought they did it for the best.
For example, the Goomba playing the harmonica was hilarious, usually you wouldn't see a little shorty playing a harmonica, would you? The risks the directors took were for the better.
Bob Hoskins was perfect, his acting showed the personality of Mario, and no other could've topped his act. Kudos to him.
Though Luigi is a bit shy and astray in the real games, he is a bit bold and bashful in this movie. This is fine in my opinion, for when Luigi usually gets a boot, he's ready for action, no matter the circumstance.
Dennis Hopper was perfect also. Though they could've used computer graphics to make a scaly evil villain, I think this is good enough. His devious actions in the movie are bold, just like Koopa's, though sometimes dumb-witted.
Princess Daisy in this movie is also a perfect cut. She has desperate actions and never stays dull. Good work on that.
While the characters from the game are not exactly placed the way they should, this was done for the better.
