Author's Review
First off, I just finished a comment on another epinion for this game and want to apologize for being a bit rough. The reason for my criticism is that a lot of the epinions are too technical. Your average person is probably not going to understand "frames-per-second" and "anti-aliasing". Not that I am unfamiliar with these industry terms, but unless you know something about programming, to mention that a game could have been better if done at 60fps instead of 30fps says nothing to me.
When I want detailed game specifications, I choose to read professional reviews by industry critics not epinions. As a fan of Epinions, I would like to see more originality, not just rehash of other reviews. I notice a lot of plagiarism (of sorts), which is dreadfully boring. I want to know why you feel your reader should include this title in their game library, why you feel the game is unique or stands above the competition.
On that note, and to back-up my viewpoints on epinions in general, I would highly-recommend this game to any Dreamcast owner for several reasons. Infogrames is setting a much-needed trend in pricing games $10-$20 cheaper than the majority of software presently on the market. Hence, at $29.99 the game is an extremely great value. Considering that the R&D costs put into this game are presumably higher than most other games on the market (to account for a highly-talented programming team as well as state-of-the-art software development kits/licenses), you can own a virtual game masterpiece for less than it costs for two large pizzas!
Test Drive LeMans offers a perfect blend of beautiful graphics, superior gameplay/sound and it boasts an incredibly long and fun to watch replay mode. The attention to detail is amazing! For instance, the distant background includes rolling hills, complete with a hazy shade on the horizon. Telephone poles/lines overhead add to the overall detail, an often overlooked element in many games. Your car's ventilated disc-brakes will appear through the mag wheels as you round the corners in replay mode. The weather effects are equally revolutionary. Driving into the sunlight will literally blind your view; rain melts into your windshield; even the clouds in the sky vary from race to race.
As for control, you can't beat the use of the analog gas pedal and braking system. It makes for an extremely tough challenge for even the best racing gurus. Because of the overwhelming speed of this game, you must make mental notes on where the hairpin turns are located because to glance and the on-screen map for even a second can lead to a crash and ultimately your losing a race. I try to identify key landmarks and other course markings and even monitor my lap times to recreate a blueprint of each track in my head. Otherwise, it's easy to mistake which direction to turn or the sharpness of the curve. Trust me, trying to stay "locked-in" on the nearly 4 minute long LeMans course will get your blood pumping like Viagra!
This is by far the best racing title yet for the Sega Dreamcast, and easily the best I've ever played on any system. It's also a top-rated game by many professional game review critics. I truly believe this game has the potential to earn game of the year for the Sega Dreamcast. This coming from a person that already owns NBA2K1, THPS2, and UFC. In a nut-shell, this game is more fun than ( insert two of your favorite MAXIM babes here) in the jacuzzi of your penthouse suite at the Vegas Hilton!!
