Author's Review
I was almost going to get rid of my Dreamcast, then Ferrari F355 Challenge appeared...now...wow, Test Drive LeMans.
This is visually the nicest driving game I've ever seen, sort of "Gran Turismo" on steroids. Lots of tracks, beautifully modelled, and amazing car modelling -you can see details like brake discs modelled independently of the wheels.
Where the game really excels is in the gameplay. There is a minimal amount of time for car set-up required, a short qualifying round, then the race. The racing is very accurate for endurance type racing, balancing fuel loads, tires, vs. number of required pit-stops. The AI is fantastic, opponent cars battle tenaciously and make mistakes, they even get over-heated and crash with each other. You can see as many as 20 cars on the track at once, with NO loss of frame rate. Very realistic.
Sound is pretty good the music is turned off and the replay mode is the best I've ever seen. Weather effects are incredible, as are the sunsets and night driving sequences.
Two very minor criticisms: the sound could be done better, and the driving is not true sim like F355 Challenge -the cars go way too fast around corners and bumping/crash physics are more arcade than sim, but a lot of fun. This is better than anything coming out on the PS2 at a very reasonable price (I have a PS2- the game prices are too high).
If you're going to get one driving game for the Dreamcast, get TDLM, if you're a fanatic, pick up F355 Challenge.
