Author's Review
When I moved a few months ago, I ended up in a smaller place. The television I had wasn't too big, but I really liked the idea of a flat screen tv as it would allow me to get rid of a piece of furniture and free up a little floor space. I ended up with the Toshiba 19HLV87 TV/DVD Combo through a work incentive program. I have been incredibly happy ever since.
The Toshiba 19HLV87 TV/DVD Combo has a screen that measures 19" across the diagonal. The makers say it has a 16:9 widescreen aspect ratio. It has a built in DVD player which loads through a slot on the side. Besides DVDs, it also can accomodate DVD-R/RW, CD, CD-R/RW, VCD, DivX, WMA, MP3 and JPEG formats. It is DivX® home theater certified. It has built in stereo speakers. My favorite feature is auto volume level which prevents too much fluctuation. No longer do commercials blast me out of the room. While I haven't used the feature, it has a feature to let you hook up your computer to the tv so you can run programs on the tv's screen.
Inputs inclue 1 S-video (rear), 1 component video (rear), 2 composite video (rear), 1 PC (rear), 1 HDMI (rear), 2 audio (rear), and 1 RF antenna (rear). Outputs: 1 optical digital audio (rear).
Our household gets its tv through cable. Following the instructions in the users manual, I hooked up and let the television find all the channels that our cable brings in. Thus, where our cable service doesn't have a channel 73, I don't get dead air when I swing by it. A little extra programming and I could eliminate those channels that I know I will never watch because they broadcast in languages I don't use.
The picture is excellent. It has been good enough that I have actually had people comment on the quality.
The tv comes with a V-chip to help parents control what their children watch. Not an issue in my household where the only "child" is my roommate's dog.
I love the sleep feature which can be set to turn off the television in anywhere from 15 minutes to two hours. I fall asleep to the longer settings sometimes, and use the shorter settings to make sure I get out of the house on time.
The remote that comes with this set is lightweight and compact. It is relatively intuitive to use. After several months the battery that came with it is still doing the job.
After several months with this television, I am as happy as when I first got it. I haven't yet invested in the wall mount - the one thing LCD tvs don't come with - so I still have the same furniture in my room.
If I had a friend on the market for a new tv, I would recommend the Toshiba 19HLV87 TV/DVD Combo as a quality unit.
