Product Review

Great car but beware of a couple things

by   cabledon ,   Jan 9, 2006

Pros:  Great ride, better acceleration than my previous Camrys and good fuel economy.

Cons:  Poor rear visibility and gas mileage that is good, but not what is advertised.

The Bottom Line:  Some adjustments to make, but BUY IT!

Overall Rating: 5/5 stars

Author's Review

I purchased this car after owning 3 consecutive Camrys because I thought it was a prudent thing to do AND I didn't really have to compromise on what I wanted in a car. That being, the driving experience, comfort and affordable. I am NOT the status conscious type so this seemed the perfect choice. True, it was more money than the Camry would have been, but I'd save on gas and get a IRS tax deduction. So I figured cost was a wash. As a bonus, I now find I can carry things that my Camry trunk would not allow and that things like brakes almost never need replacing. But there are a few negatives like rear visibility and the fact that the cars MPG claims are deceiving. Yes, if you put the car in cruise control at 65 you will get 50MPG. And "city" driving can achieve higher than 60MPG if the car is warm and you aren't accelerating to more than 10 or 15 MPH. But overall, we're talking more like 35-40mpg per tank, depending on your mix of driving. My home is only a 1/2 mile from my office and that run is no more efficient in this car than it was in my Camry since the gas engine is warming up during the short trip rather than laying back when it's warm. Lastly, I had one BIG problem. I ran out of gas with two fuel bars left. But the tank only took 8.3 gallons even though the tank is listed as 11.9. I'm still waiting for an explanation from Toyota on this. I learned one important lesson: you cannot drive a hybrid on the electric engine when the gas engine goes. The battery will deplete almost instantly.
